[VIDEO]: How to prepare coffee with an AeroPress

AeroPress is one of the youngest coffee accessories on the market, which has made an indelible mark in the world of fine coffee preparation. Its portability and durability make it a practical companion on the go, and its versatile design allows for a variety of creative approaches to preparing excellent filter coffee. Preparation with this device is relatively quick and simple, which you can see for yourself in the video below. You can prepare one cup of coffee in 4 to 5 minutes.

What you will need:

Other optional accessories:

  • Barista kettle from Brewists with adjustable temperature and or kettle Buono V60 from Hario
  • Scale (ours also has a stopwatch)
  • Stopwatch

Consider the following instructions for preparing 220-250 ml of coffee, i.e. the volume of approximately one coffee mug or can. One of the many advantages of the AeroPress is that you can use it to prepare coffee in a variety of ways. Below is the tutorial for the so-called classic method, for which the AeroPress was made. In the video above, we show the preparation of coffee both in the classic way, but also in the increasingly popular inverted method, in which the Aeropress stands on the piston, which is already placed on the tube during the preparation itself.

Step 1 – measure and heat the water

Boil approx. 300 ml of water. You will need 220-250 ml of water for 1 mug, but you will also use some to wash the filter and heat the AeroPress with the mug. If you have an adjustable temperature kettle, heat the water between 85 and 94°C. If not, let the regular kettle sit for a minute after it reaches boiling point.

Step 2 – measure and grind the coffee

While the water is boiling, measure out about 15-17 grams of coffee using the measuring cup included in the AeroPress package. If you have a scale, you can of course measure the grains with its help.

"To determine the correct ratio between coffee and water, remember the simple rule that you need approx. 60 g of ground coffee for 1 liter of hot water. The correct ratio can easily be derived from this. 60 g of coffee / 1000 ml of water = 0.06 (coffee coefficient). 250 ml of water x 0.06 = 15 g of coffee.”

Pour the beans into the grinder and immerse yourself in coffee grinding just like Jiří & Jiří in our video tutorial above. But before you start, make sure you have the grinder set to the right coarseness. We grind medium-coarse (roughness similar to ground crystalline salt), but you can experiment with that too.

Step 3 – rinse and replace the filter and add ground coffee

Insert the circular filter into the strainer and rinse it evenly with heated water (the filter will stick nicely this way). Preheat the AeroPress and mug with water at the same time. Screw the strainer to the bottom of the tube and place it on the mug. It's time to add ground coffee (the AeroPress package also includes a funnel for easier pouring of coffee into the tube).

Step 4 - pour water

Remove the funnel (if you used one), start the stopwatch and pour water evenly into the tube up to the number 4 within 10 seconds (if you have an AeroPress on the scale, pour approx. 220 ml of water, which corresponds approximately to the number 4 line). Stir the coffee with a stirrer and make sure the coffee is saturated with water.

Step 5 - create negative pressure with the piston wait

Place the plunger in the tube and pull it out slightly so that a vacuum is created and the water does not drip into the cup. Wait, the time to press the piston will come in approx. 1 minute and 15 seconds. After the time has passed, you can either pull out the plunger and stir the coffee once more, or proceed directly to slow pressing.

Step 6 - squeeze, rinse and enjoy

Begin to push the piston down slowly, which should take between 20 and 30 seconds until you reach the end and hear a faint hiss.

The AeroPress is easy to clean. Simply unscrew the strainer and squeeze the coffee with the filter into the basket. If you are about to prepare another cup of coffee, clean the rubber plunger with hot water and repeat the preparation process from the beginning.

The best for last! Now you can enjoy a cup of sweetly delicious and full coffee. The more often you repeat the procedure, the more you will master it and adapt it. Definitely don't be afraid to experiment and try other recipes. Since 2008, the AeroPress World Championship has been held regularly, and here you can get inspired by some of the winning recipes .
